According to an email that was sent to employees Tuesday night, Elon Musk, Chief Executive of Tesla Inc, asked them to either return to work or leave the company. This according to Reuters.

The email stated that Tesla employees must spend at least 40 hours per week in the office.

“If you don’t show up, then we will assume that you have resigned.”

Two sources from Tesla confirmed the authenticity and legitimacy of the email that Reuters reviewed. Tesla didn’t respond to a request to comment.

Musk’s Twitter followers shared another email Musk sent to executives, asking them to either work at the office for 40 hours per week or to “depart Tesla”.

The billionaire responded to the tweet by saying that he would make Twitter Inc private in an agreement worth $44 billion. Musk could not be reached for comment.

In the face of an increase in coronavirus cases, some tech workers are resisting attempts to get them back to work in California. This is where Tesla’s factory and engineering base is located.

Musk opened a Tesla factory at Fremont in May 2020, defying county lockdown measures that were put in place to stop the spread of coronavirus. According to Alameda County data, Plainsite has found that Tesla had reported 440 cases in the factory between May and December 2020.

Tesla joins the growing number of companies that demand employees return to work.

Some large employers have made it permanent to allow employees to work from home, but others like Alphabet Inc’s Google believe that it is better to encourage in-person interaction among coworkers.

Parag Agrawal, CEO of Twitter, tweeted March that Twitter offices were reopening. However employees could still work remotely if they so desired.

Agrawal stated in a March 3 tweet that “Wherever you feel most productive, creative, is where you’ll work”,
