Apple introduced Stage Manager during WWDC in June, for iPados along with MacOS. Due to a rumored limitation for older iPads, Stage Manager was available only on iPads running M1. The feature will be available for all iPad Pro models will get the feature in iPadOS 16.1.
“We created the Stage Manager as a brand innovative way to multitask using multiple, resizable windows that can be stacked that can be used on each iPad display and an external display. This is in addition to the capability to display at least eight real-time applications on one screen. The multi-display feature is only available using the full power of iPads running M1. Users with iPad Pros of the 3rd as well as 4th generation expressed their interest in having the ability to use stage manager on the iPad. As a result, our teams have been hard at work to discover a way to provide a single-screen version of Stage Manager for these devices and support as many as four Live applications that can be displayed on an iPad screen simultaneously.

External display support for external displays Stage Manager on M1 iPads will be made available as an update to the software later this year.”
Stage Manager when used on an external display is a problem in iPadOS 16 betas. Apple is putting off Stage Manager support on M1 iPads until it improves the stability of the app.
M1 iPads will not be able to make use of Stage Manager until later this year. However, 3rd and fourth generation iPad Pro model (running A12X as well as A12Z Bionic chips) will not be able to support Stage Manager via an external display. It is only compatible with the built-in display.
Stage Manager is on iPadOS 16.1 and macOS Ventura. The fall is expected to bring these updates. The update will be available in October. MacOS will get an update.
