Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has made a remarkable comeback in the latest general elections, despite the party’s leader being incarcerated. Speculation is rife both within Pakistan and globally about who will assume the role of the next premier, as PTI’s founder, Khan, delivered a victory speech from his jail cell. In his address, Khan, aged 71, declared the failure of the purported “London plan” and highlighted the significant number of independent candidates supported by PTI who are leading in the race for National Assembly seats. Khan announced that his party is leading in 170 seats of the National Assembly, the lower house of Pakistan’s parliament. In a direct jab at his rivals, he questioned why Nawaz Sharif, leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), was delivering a victory speech when his party trailed behind Tehreek-e-Insaf.
