Social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, has quietly introduced a feature that allows it to use user data to train its AI model, Grok. This feature is available exclusively to X Premium subscribers. While it is possible to disable this data-sharing setting, it can only be done via the web version of X.

When enabled, X can utilize users’ posts, interactions, and conversations with Grok to enhance the AI’s capabilities. Users concerned about privacy can deactivate this feature by signing into X on a PC or laptop, navigating to the “Privacy and safety” section, finding “Grok,” and unchecking the “Data Sharing” box. Users who have opted out can also delete their previous interactions with Grok.

Elon Musk recently revealed that xAI, X’s AI division, has started training Grok using one of the world’s most powerful AI training clusters. Musk aims for Grok to become the leading AI model by December 2024. To achieve this, X plans to incorporate user data, including historical tweets and posts, into Grok’s training.

This move has sparked concerns about data privacy and has drawn criticism from users. X is not alone in facing backlash over the use of user data for AI development. Meta, for instance, had to pause its plans to use public content from Facebook and Instagram for AI training due to regulatory issues.
