The Gawala Union has announced a price increase for milk, yogurt, and butter in Rawalpindi, effective Friday. The new rates will see an additional Rs20 per liter or kilogram, raising the price of open milk to Rs220 per liter and yogurt to Rs240 per kilogram.

Previously, milk was sold at Rs200 per liter and yogurt at Rs220 per kilogram. The price of butter has also risen significantly, from Rs1,000 to Rs1,200 per kilogram. These new prices exceed the official rates, which are Rs190 per liter for milk and Rs200 per kilogram for yogurt.

Gawala Union Secretary Khawar Chaudhary cited the sharp rise in buffalo fodder costs as the reason for the price increase. “Buffalo fodder prices have surged by 500% to 700%, and the cost of a buffalo has risen to Rs0.8 million. Given these increases, it is unsustainable to maintain the previous milk prices,” Chaudhary explained.

The price hikes are expected to generate further debate and concern among consumers, who are already feeling the effects of inflation on their daily expenses. Households will need to adjust their budgets to cope with the rising costs of essential items like milk and yogurt.

Local authorities have yet to address the situation, but there is increasing pressure on them to tackle the factors driving these cost increases.
