The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has launched the second phase of its nationwide crackdown on illegal mobile phone SIMs, beginning on September 2, 2024. This phase specifically targets SIM cards that are registered under expired Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) issued before 2017.

This initiative is part of the PTA’s broader strategy to prevent the misuse of SIM cards and enhance security across the country. In close collaboration with the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), the PTA has been able to identify and target SIMs linked to expired or invalid CNICs. The PTA has urged all consumers to renew their expired CNICs with NADRA and to complete the necessary biometric verification to avoid any disruption in their mobile services. The overarching goal is to ensure that all active SIMs are associated with valid, up-to-date identity documents, thereby reducing the illegal use of mobile networks.

The crackdown on illegal SIMs first began on August 16, 2024. During this initial phase, the PTA successfully blocked more than 69,000 SIM cards that were linked to canceled or fraudulent identity documents.

Looking ahead, the PTA has announced that the third phase of this operation will commence on October 16, 2024. In this phase, the focus will shift to SIM cards registered in the names of deceased individuals. Consumers have been advised to update their information with NADRA and their mobile service providers to prevent their SIMs from being blocked during this phase.

The PTA has made it clear that the misuse of mobile phone SIMs, which is often associated with illegal activities such as terrorism, online crimes, and financial fraud, will not be tolerated. These illegal SIMs pose a serious threat to national security and public safety, as they enable criminal activities that undermine the rule of law. By ensuring that all SIMs are linked to legitimate, up-to-date identity documents, the PTA aims to protect citizens, uphold the integrity of the telecommunications system, and mitigate the risks associated with the illegal use of mobile networks.
