SAIC Motors has officially launched the MG ES5, a pure-electric compact SUV designed for families. This sleek, high-tech SUV offers three driving range options: 425 km, 515 km, and 525 km, catering to a variety of driving needs.

Formerly known as the “S5,” the MG ES5 has been rebranded and is expected to be priced between 100,000 and 150,000 yuan (approximately Rs. 3.9 million to Rs. 5.85 million) in China. The vehicle is set to launch later this year, with export plans already in motion. A test version of the vehicle was spotted in Europe earlier this year.

Built on SAIC’s Nebula pure-electric platform, the ES5 features advanced engineering, including a five-link rear suspension system. It measures 4476 mm in length, 1849 mm in width, and 1621 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2730 mm. The vehicle’s curb weight varies depending on the battery size: 1685 kg and 1740 kg, with a spacious interior offering 4.24 square meters of usable space.

Design and Features

The MG ES5’s design is modern and sleek, featuring a closed-off front fascia, narrow sharp headlights, and split grilles. Other exterior features include blackened side mirrors, silver roof racks, conventional door handles, and Y-shaped tail lights. The SUV also offers two rim size options: 17 inches and 18 inches.

Performance and Powertrain

The MG ES5 is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor that delivers 125 kW (168 hp) and 250 Nm of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8 seconds, with a top speed of 170 km/h. The SUV is equipped with lithium iron phosphate battery packs, available in two capacities: 49.1 kWh and 62.2 kWh, provided by the CATL-SAIC joint venture. The vehicle offers impressive driving ranges according to the CLTC cycle: 425 km, 515 km, and 525 km, which are expected to be around 400 km, 485 km, and 500 km in real-world conditions.

The battery pack is notable for being just 110 mm thick, which is claimed to be the world’s thinnest.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the MG ES5 features a modern cabin with a central control screen, an instrument panel, and a flat-bottom steering wheel. While the size of the screen is undisclosed, the center console is designed for extra storage and includes wireless phone charging along with two cupholders. The vehicle also offers a panoramic sunroof to enhance the interior’s sense of space and openness.

With a perfect blend of performance, design, and cutting-edge technology, the MG ES5 is poised to make a significant impact in the electric SUV market.
