Moon Sighting to Determine Start of Ramadan in Pakistan
The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee is set to convene in Peshawar on the evening of February 28 (Friday) to determine the sighting of the Ramadan crescent. If the moon is sighted, the holy month of fasting will officially commence on March 1 (Saturday). The meeting will be presided over by Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad, with proceedings beginning after the Asr prayer. Simultaneously, zonal committees across different regions will also assess and verify moon sighting reports.
Religious Scholars to Confirm the Start of Ramadan
The central meeting will include participation from religious scholars of various sects to confirm the start of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. The holy month is observed by millions in Pakistan and billions worldwide, with Muslims fasting from sunrise to sunset. Fasting durations vary globally, ranging between 12 to 17 hours based on geographical location.

PMD and International Forecasts on Ramadan’s Start
Earlier this week, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) projected that the first fast in Pakistan is likely to fall on March 2. According to PMD, the new moon is expected to form on February 28 at 5:45 PM, meaning the crescent may only be visible on March 1.
Meanwhile, an astronomy center in Abu Dhabi, UAE, forecasted that Ramadan is likely to begin on March 1, as reported by The National. The International Astronomical Centre (IAC) noted that most Muslim countries will attempt to observe the new moon on February 28, with some Arab nations potentially spotting it the same night.
Charity and Commercial Activities During Ramadan
As in many parts of the world, Ramadan in Pakistan is marked by increased charitable activities, including food distribution and roadside stalls offering free meals for those returning home in the evening.
Additionally, the holy month drives a surge in commercial activity, as people begin shopping for Eid ul Fitr, leading to heightened business and trade across the country.
