Lock Screen Widgets Making a Comeback
Google has announced that lock screen widgets will soon be available on more Android tablets and smartphones, expanding beyond their current exclusivity on the Pixel Tablet. This feature, once part of early Android versions, is returning with Android 16, expected to launch in June 2025.
Returning After Years of Absence
Lock screen widgets were a popular feature in older Android versions but were later removed. Now, with Android 16, Google is bringing them back, allowing users to customize their lock screens with useful information and quick access to apps. Developers will be able to enable these widgets soon after the update rolls out.

How Lock Screen Widgets Will Work
Currently, on the Pixel Tablet, users can access lock screen widgets by swiping right from the lock screen. However, smartphones running Android 16 may implement them differently.
According to Android Authority, early tests indicate that smartphones may require Android’s screensaver mode to be active—a feature that only works when the device is charging or docked.
Customization and Manufacturer Variations
Google is giving developers and manufacturers the flexibility to decide how widgets will function. Some devices may allow direct access from the lock screen, while others may restrict them to specific conditions like charging or docking.
With the return of lock screen widgets, Android users will once again enjoy a customizable, at-a-glance experience, similar to what Apple offers with iOS. The final implementation will likely vary by manufacturer, but this update signals a more personalized and interactive lock screen experience for Android users.
