The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has received applications from two more companies seeking registration as VPN service providers. This comes after licenses were issued to two companies earlier under the class license for data services.

Targeted VPN Registrations and Possible Restrictions

  • PTA aims to register seven VPN providers by May 2025.
  • Once the registration process is complete, the government may block certain VPNs based on specific criteria.
  • Currently, around 40 VPNs are operational in Pakistan.

Government Oversight on VPNs

  • The final decision to block VPNs will rest with the federal government, not PTA.
  • PTA officials confirmed that they cannot support the closure of VPNs at this stage.

VPN Licensing Initiative in Pakistan

  • The VPN registration process began in December 2024.
  • Only licensed VPN service providers will be legally allowed to operate in Pakistan.
