In a major move to combat rising digital threats, Google has unveiled a suite of new security and privacy features in Android 2025, designed to protect users through AI-powered, on-device smart defenses. Announced by Dave Kleidermacher, VP of Android Security and Privacy, the update reflects Google’s drive to match and exceed iOS in proactive mobile security across its 3+ billion device ecosystem.
Smarter Call Protection
Android now detects suspicious activity during calls from unknown numbers—blocking attempts to disable security features, sideload apps, or grant sensitive permissions. Users also receive a prompt to stop screen sharing once the call ends, helping to prevent real-time social engineering.
Enhanced Banking Security
A new feature, currently being piloted in the UK, warns users if they open a banking app while on a call and screen sharing with an unknown number. This aims to stop fraudsters posing as bank agents from guiding victims into revealing financial info.
Advanced AI Scam Detection
Android’s scam detection, first launched in 2023, now recognizes more fraud types, including crypto scams, tech support hoaxes, and gift card frauds. All analysis remains on-device, ensuring privacy while delivering real-time alerts.
Key Verifier for Secure Messaging
To combat impersonation threats, Android introduces a Key Verifier in Google Messages. Users can visually confirm encryption keys with contacts via QR code or number matching—flagging suspicious key changes that may indicate account compromise.
Stronger Theft Protection in Android 16
Updates include:
- Factory Reset Hardening: Phones can’t be used after unauthorized resets.
- Remote Lock Challenge: Adds an extra question to prevent misuse of the lock feature.
- OTP Protection: Hides one-time passwords on the lock screen if theft risk is detected.
Advanced Protection Program Expansion
High-risk users like journalists or activists can now enable stronger protections directly from Android 16, including tougher account security settings.
Upgraded Google Play Protect
Google’s app scanner now detects hidden or disguised malicious apps using live pattern recognition and frequent rule updates, identifying threats even before installation.

Ongoing Improvements via Google Play Services
Most of these features will roll out via Google Play Services, bringing advanced protection even to users on older Android versions.
With this update, Android 2025 embraces a prevention-first strategy, using AI, on-device analysis, and deeper system-level controls to secure users against evolving cyber threats.
