Karachi Enforces Strict Measures to Prevent Urban Flooding This Monsoon

In an effort to prevent drainage blockages and flooding during the upcoming monsoon season, the Sindh government has enforced a two-month ban on dumping waste into Karachi’s drainage system.

The directive, issued by Karachi Commissioner Hassan Naqvi, prohibits the disposal of garbage, debris, solid waste, and other materials into the city’s drains. Authorities aim to reduce environmental hazards and avoid sewer overflows that typically result from clogged nullahs during heavy rainfall.

Police have been instructed to take strict action against violators under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

This marks the second time this year such a ban has been enacted, with a similar restriction put in place in March 2025. Officials continue to urge cooperation from public, private, and autonomous institutions to maintain sanitation standards and prevent urban flooding.

Meanwhile, the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has issued a monsoon preparedness alert as of May 26, emphasizing safety protocols for incoming rains and potential flooding. The advisory includes measures such as monitoring vessel safety, securing mooring lines, maintaining backup power systems, and moving smaller boats to sheltered locations. Port pilots are required to remain on standby throughout the monsoon period.
