Millions of WhatsApp users may lose access to the messaging platform as Meta has officially started phasing out support for older smartphones from June 1, 2025. This decision follows WhatsApp’s updated compatibility policy, which aims to improve security and functionality by requiring more advanced operating systems.

Devices Losing Access
The app will no longer function on smartphones that cannot be updated to at least iOS 15.1 or Android 5.0. This change affects several legacy devices, including older iPhones such as the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, which are not compatible with iOS 18. Android devices like the Samsung Galaxy S III, HTC One X, and Sony Xperia Z are also impacted due to their outdated operating systems.

Meta explained that older devices lacking essential security updates or modern capabilities will no longer support WhatsApp, as detailed on the platform’s official FAQ page.

Advance Notifications Sent
In preparation for the update, WhatsApp sent alerts to affected users, advising them to upgrade their operating systems or switch to supported devices. Without an upgrade, users will lose access to messaging, voice, and video call features.

Notably, Apple has already categorized the iPhone 6 as “obsolete,” ending official service and support, even from third-party repair vendors.

What Users Should Do
Users are advised to check their device’s OS version and update it if possible. Those unable to upgrade are encouraged to transition to newer smartphones to maintain access to WhatsApp.

As WhatsApp continues to add new features and prioritize user security, the app’s reliance on up-to-date hardware and software is growing. While these changes improve performance and safety, they also mark a final goodbye for many legacy devices.
