YouTube CEO Neal Mohan has announced that Google’s powerful new AI video generation model, Veo 3, will be integrated into YouTube Shorts later this summer. This marks a major technological leap for content creators on the platform, enhancing the creative possibilities with advanced AI tools.

Shorts Sees Explosive Growth
YouTube Shorts has experienced a remarkable 186% growth in engagement over the past year, with the platform now averaging over 200 billion daily views. While YouTube continues to dominate as the most watched video platform globally, Shorts is quickly becoming its fastest-growing feature.

What Veo 3 Offers
YouTube currently offers limited AI support through features like Dream Screen, which creates background visuals based on text prompts. The introduction of Veo 3 will go much further—allowing creators to generate full short-form videos using either text or image prompts.

However, Veo 3 currently outputs in 720p resolution and landscape format, which poses compatibility issues with YouTube Shorts’ vertical video standard. While Mohan didn’t confirm if a portrait-format version is in the works, it’s likely a priority for full integration.

Access and Pricing Questions Remain
Currently, access to Veo 3 is restricted to users subscribed to Google’s $250 per month AI Ultra plan, which allows only 125 eight-second video generations per month. It remains unclear whether YouTube Shorts users will be able to access Veo 3 for free or if it will require a separate paid subscription.

More details are expected as Google finalizes its rollout plans, with full access to Shorts creators anticipated “later this summer.”
