Israel intensified its military campaign against Iran on Monday, striking Tehran’s Evin prison—a symbolic center of the Islamic Republic’s internal repression—as well as several command centers and airports. The attack came a day after the United States officially entered the conflict with its own airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Evin prison, known for holding political prisoners and high-profile detainees since the 1979 revolution, was one of the key sites hit in what Israel described as its most forceful strike on the Iranian capital to date. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the operation targeted regime infrastructure and repression apparatus in Tehran.

Other strikes included Iranian Revolutionary Guard bases, an electricity station in the Evin neighborhood, and access routes to the Fordow nuclear facility—already bombed by the US a day earlier. Israeli forces also confirmed airstrikes on six Iranian airports, damaging aircraft, runways, and underground shelters.

Iran vowed to respond, with Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh declaring the country was ready to defend itself “to the end,” drawing parallels to the Iran-Iraq war. In retaliation, Iran launched more missiles at Israel, triggering air raid sirens in Jerusalem and across the country. Yemen officially joined the war, warning foreign ships to stay away from its waters.

The US has confirmed it used B-2 Spirit bombers to strike Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, deploying 75 precision-guided munitions and over two dozen Tomahawk missiles. President Donald Trump celebrated the mission’s success on social media, saying “Monumental Damage was done” and all targets were hit “far below ground level.” Trump’s remarks also hinted at a possible regime change in Iran, a stance contradicted by other US officials.

Meanwhile, global leaders and organizations expressed alarm. South Korean President Lee Jae-myung warned of rising oil prices and inflation. Pope Leo XIV urged for peace, condemning the violence and stressing the need to avoid an “irreparable abyss.” The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) denounced the US actions as illegal and counterproductive to non-proliferation efforts.

Protests erupted worldwide, including in Iran and US cities, as fears of a wider regional conflict grow with each passing day.
