Google has issued a global warning as account hacking attempts have reached unprecedented levels in 2025. The tech giant reported an alarming 84% rise in email-based password theft over the past year, with phishing attacks and credential-stealing tactics now posing serious threats to user security.
Andy Wen, Google’s Senior Director of Product Management, revealed that 37% of all successful account breaches are now linked to phishing and stolen login credentials. More advanced techniques, including authentication token abuse and cookie theft, are also being used by cybercriminals to bypass standard login protections.
This warning holds significant importance for Pakistani users, where millions depend on Google services such as Gmail, YouTube, Android, and Google Workspace. With the country’s digital footprint expanding rapidly, hacked accounts could lead to data theft, financial loss, and privacy violations.

Supporting Google’s concerns, a Cisco Talos report highlights that credential harvesting is the most common motive behind phishing attacks. One recent case involved cybercriminals using a fake Microsoft 365 login page to collect user passwords and two-factor authentication (2FA) codes. Attackers often exploit trusted email accounts to sneak past spam filters and gain victims’ trust.
How to Recover a Hacked Google Account:
If your Google account is compromised, Google recommends the following recovery steps:
-
Visit g.co/recover from a known device and browser.
-
Enter your email address and accurately answer the recovery questions.
-
Use your recovery phone, email, or device prompt to verify your identity.
-
Reset your password when prompted.
Google also stressed that it never asks for your password or codes via calls, emails, or texts—any such attempt should be treated as phishing.
Pakistani users are strongly urged to enable 2FA, avoid suspicious links, and change passwords regularly. As cyber threats continue to evolve, staying vigilant and proactive with account security is essential.
