Trackless Trams Coming Soon to Two More Major Cities in Punjab
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced the upcoming launch of the Super Autonomous Rapid Transit (SART) system in Faisalabad and Gujranwala, following its successful test run in Lahore.
On Tuesday, the chief minister personally boarded the electric SART vehicle for a test drive from Raiwind Road to Muslim Town, closely inspecting the modern tram’s features and performance in real traffic conditions. Crowds gathered along the route to witness the debut of Pakistan’s first fully electric, trackless tram.

Transport Minister Bilal Akbar briefed Maryam Nawaz on the advanced technology and passenger-centric design of the SART system, which is developed by Norinco International. Each air-conditioned tram unit includes three compartments with a capacity of 320 passengers, extendable to four compartments. A single charge allows the vehicle to travel up to 40 kilometers.
Already operating in countries like China, Turkey, and the UAE, the SART system is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and curb environmental pollution in Pakistan’s urban centers. Maryam Nawaz emphasized that the project not only modernizes Lahore’s public transport but will soon bring similar benefits to residents of Faisalabad and Gujranwala.
