According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (Met Office), strong monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal continue to affect the country. A Low-Pressure Area (LPA) over the Bay of Bengal is expected to move westward starting August 17, further intensifying monsoon activity. A westerly wave is also influencing the weather system across the region.


Regional Forecasts (17th–22nd August)

Kashmir & Gilgit-Baltistan

  • Widespread rain-wind/thundershowers, with scattered heavy to very heavy falls, are expected from August 17–19.
  • Affected areas: Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Bagh, Kotli, Mirpur, Diamir, Astore, Skardu, Gilgit, Hunza, and others.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

  • Widespread rain/thundershowers, with heavy falls, are likely in districts including Swat, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Peshawar, Charsadda, Kohat, Waziristan, and D.I. Khan from August 17–19.

Punjab & Islamabad

  • Heavy rain/thundershowers expected in Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Sialkot, Murree, and surrounding areas from August 17–19.
  • South Punjab areas like D.G. Khan, Multan, Bahawalpur, and Rajanpur will likely experience scattered rain from August 18–20.

Sindh

  • Rain/thundershowers with scattered heavy falls expected from August 17–22, affecting Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Thatta, Tharparkar, and more.

Balochistan

  • Rain with isolated heavy falls is expected in Zhob, Khuzdar, Gwadar, Panjgur, and others from August 17–21.

Possible Impacts & Warnings

  • Flash Flood Risk:
    • In northern KP, Kashmir, Murree, and northeast Punjab from August 17–19.
    • In D.G. Khan and eastern Balochistan from August 18–21.
  • Urban Flooding Likely:
    • In low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Peshawar, and Nowshera from August 17–19.
    • In urban Sindh cities, including Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, etc., from August 17–22.
  • Landslides and Mudslides:
    • Risk in Murree, Galliyat, KP’s hilly areas, GB, and Kashmir during this period.
  • Structural Damage:
    • Heavy rain, windstorms, and lightning may damage weak structures, such as Kacha houses, billboards, poles, and solar panels.
