The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecom was briefed on the growing threat of financial fraud in Pakistan. Officials from the National Counter-Cybercrime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) revealed that illegal call centers and fake software houses are targeting citizens with fraudulent investment schemes, leading many people to lose their savings.

The committee was informed that online financial fraud worth Rs. 2 to 3 billion has been reported, with Rs. 720 million already confirmed. In the past year alone, authorities raided 63 illegal call centers and arrested around 450 individuals. Despite these efforts, the committee urged stronger and faster action against illegal networks.

Officials also highlighted the sharp rise in WhatsApp frauds, where hacked accounts are used to trick family and friends into sending money. They noted that more than 60% of cybercrime complaints are linked to electronic fraud.

NCCIA emphasized the need for stricter laws, improved awareness campaigns, and greater public cooperation. Citizens were advised to stay alert against unknown calls, fake investment offers, and suspicious messages. The committee acknowledged ongoing efforts but stressed that cybercrime remains a serious threat to Pakistan’s digital economy and public trust.
