Two palm oil shipments carrying 27,000 metric tonnes and 30,000 metric tons each left Indonesia Tuesday for Pakistan. This alleviates fears of a shortage in the country.

On the instructions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Federal Minister for Industries and Production Makhdoom Syed Murtaza Mahmud led an delegation to Jakarta between 12-14 June.

The purpose of the visit was to reduce the negative impact of Indonesia’s recent ban on palm oil exports to Pakistan and to ensure that the commodity is available in Pakistani markets.

Eight more palm oil shipments are expected to reach Karachi by the end of June. Pakistan is the third largest importer of Indonesian palm oils. The country imported 2.78 Million Tonnes of palm oil from Indonesia in 2021.

During the visit, minister met with Muhammad Lutfi (Indonesian Minister of Trade), Agus Gumiwang Karatasmita, Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs Luhut Binsar Panjaitan and Agus Gumiwang Cartasasmita, Minister of Industries. The minister was also visited by representatives of the largest palm oil exporters in Pakistan as well as the chairman of the Indonesian Palm Oil Association.
