Apple is reportedly halting its decade-long pursuit of producing an electric car, according to sources familiar with the matter cited by Bloomberg. The Special Projects Group, comprising nearly 2,000 employees, was informed of this decision by Apple executives Jeff Williams and Kevin Lynch.

Reportedly, most of the employees from the Special Projects Group will transition to Apple’s artificial intelligence division, focusing on generative AI projects. While several hundred hardware engineers and car designers may seek other opportunities within Apple, there are expectations of undisclosed layoffs.

The launch of Apple’s car has been delayed to 2028 due to production challenges, the company recently announced. Shifting away from a fully autonomous vehicle, Apple is now concentrating on a design with limited self-driving features.

Before terminating the project, Apple executives expressed concerns about the electric car’s profitability. Despite investing hundreds of millions annually, the company planned to price the vehicle at approximately $100,000.
