WhatsApp is rolling out a new security update aimed at enhancing protection against malicious links, addressing the increasing prevalence of spam messages in real-time communication. Unlike the simpler threats of the early 90s, today’s malicious actors have a vast array of tools at their disposal, making link-based attacks more sophisticated.

In the recent 2.23.16.6 update for Android, WhatsApp introduced safety tools that help users manage messages from unknown contacts. When you receive a message from an unfamiliar sender, a safety screen will appear, allowing you to block or report the sender while providing details about their profile and country code. While these updates focus on user safety, WhatsApp has faced criticism regarding its privacy and data collection policies in the past.

According to WABetaInfo, the forthcoming beta version for Android, 2.24.20.28, will feature a new tool designed to further improve link verification. Currently, users can search for links in WhatsApp, but the updated “Safety Screen” will simplify the process by guiding users on how to research links effectively. This new interface will allow users to gather more information about received links or even search for specific text messages independently.

These enhancements respond to past security incidents, including a notable 2019 vulnerability that allowed spyware installation through unanswered calls. While a release date has not been announced, WhatsApp indicated that the feature is still under development and will be available soon. For those eager to try it early, the latest WhatsApp beta can be accessed via the Google Play Store, but keep in mind that beta features may differ from the final version.
