Google Expands Gemini Live’s Language Capabilities
Google is reportedly working on adding support for a second language in Gemini Live, its real-time AI voice chat feature. This enhancement will allow users to speak and interact with the AI in two different languages across speech and text modalities, improving multilingual communication.
The first indications of this feature appeared in December 2024, and now Google has updated its support pages to reflect the upcoming dual-language support.
Bilingual Conversations with Gemini Live
Currently, Gemini Live enables users to switch between languages mid-sentence, and the AI can understand and respond accordingly. With proper prompting, users can make Gemini respond in two languages simultaneously, benefiting speakers of hybrid languages like Hinglish (Hindi + English) or Spanglish (Spanish + English).
However, Gemini sometimes fails to recognize the second language, despite multiple prompts. Additionally, dual-language support is currently limited to Gemini Live, restricting its usability across other AI interactions.
Google Testing Second Language Settings in Gemini
According to an Android Authority report, Google is developing a settings option that will let users set a second language. This was discovered during an APK teardown of the Google app beta version 16.9.39.sa.arm64.
- The new settings option can be activated by enabling specific flags within the app.
- However, despite adding a second language, the feature remains unavailable, likely because it requires a server-side update.

Separately, Google has expanded language support for Gemini Live, increasing it from 30 languages to over 45 languages. The support page now states:
“In settings, you can add up to 2 languages to talk with Gemini Live in.”
Unclear Roadmap for Wider Gemini Integration
It remains unclear how Google plans to integrate dual-language support across different AI interactions, such as:
- Gemini AI assistant on Android devices
- Text-based interactions within the chatbot
- App-specific Gemini tools within Google Workspace
Google has not yet announced an official release date for this feature. However, its support page updates and internal testing indicate that bilingual Gemini Live conversations may become widely available soon.
