In a significant escalation, Pakistan’s military has confirmed that the Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project sustained damage during recent Indian attacks. Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry stated that India targeted the dam as part of a series of unprovoked strikes on the night of May 6-7. The assault on the dam, a critical component of Pakistan’s energy infrastructure, raises serious concerns about the legality of targeting such facilities under international and war laws.

The ISPR chief detailed that the attack on the Neelum-Jhelum dam was part of a broader offensive on six locations, including places of worship in Ahmedpur East and Muridke, resulting in civilian casualties. Five more civilians, including a child, were killed in Indian firing along the Line of Control (LoC). While attacks in Sialkot and Shakargarh caused no casualties or property damage, the targeting of essential facilities and civilian sites was condemned as a violation of international norms.

Pakistan’s armed forces responded promptly to the aggression, ensuring the safety of key assets and infrastructure. Officials have labeled the attack on the dam a dangerous escalation and have vowed to raise the issue at international forums.
