The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), in collaboration with leading telecom operators PTCL, Transworld, Nayatel, Cybernet, and Wateen, has launched a six-month free Wi-Fi hotspot initiative at selected HEC-recognized universities, including dedicated women’s institutions.
As part of this digital empowerment effort, 200 locally assembled smartphones—provided by mobile phone manufacturers—will be distributed to female SIM card holders across Pakistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) through a computerized ballot.
The announcement coincides with a historic milestone in Pakistan’s telecom sector, as the total number of telecom subscribers has now exceeded 200 million, including over 125 million broadband users and 15 million FTTH (Fiber to the Home) connections.

To celebrate this national achievement, PTA and mobile operators are offering 2 GB of free data and 200 on-net minutes to all subscribers on June 20, 2025. The package can be activated by dialing *2200# from any network.
In addition, a wider Digital Outreach Program has been launched in partnership with PTCL, Ufone, and the Ministry of IT, aiming to establish internet setups and distribute free laptops at selected universities in Balochistan and merged districts, promoting inclusive digital access in underserved regions.
PTA reaffirmed its commitment to “Connecting Pakistan” and ensuring digital empowerment across all segments of society.
