Punjab is gearing up to launch Pakistan’s first electric taxi service, with the provincial government finalizing the financing structure and operational plan. The initiative, spearheaded by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, aims to modernize urban transport while reducing emissions and travel costs.
Project Overview
In the initial phase, 1,100 electric taxis will hit the roads of Lahore. The project, backed by a Rs. 2 billion allocation, will introduce a new era of sustainable mobility in Punjab, marking a major step toward eco-friendly transportation.
Financing Structure
To make the service accessible, the government has created a financing model that benefits both drivers and the environment:
- Loan Facility: Banks will offer loans of up to Rs. 6.5 million for electric vehicles.
- Interest-Free Support: The Punjab government will cover the interest cost.
- Down Payment Subsidy: For vehicles priced between Rs. 4 million and Rs. 10 million, the government will contribute Rs. 585,000 toward the down payment.
This model ensures that drivers only need to make a small upfront contribution, with the remaining amount covered through bank financing.
Vehicle & Infrastructure Plan
The fleet will initially consist of 1,100 Chinese-manufactured electric vehicles, chosen for their reliability and cost efficiency. To support this rollout, 18 EV charging stations have already been set up in Lahore, with further expansion planned across the province.
Benefits of the Electric Taxi Service
- Reduced Transport Costs: Lower running costs compared to fuel-powered vehicles.
- Environmental Impact: Significant reduction in carbon emissions.
- Urban Modernization: A step forward in aligning with global standards of clean and smart transport.
Looking Ahead
The Punjab Electric Taxi Service represents a major milestone in Pakistan’s transport sector. If successful, the project could expand beyond Lahore and inspire similar initiatives across the country.
