According to Intel third quarter earnings report for the year 2022, the company revealed that they have signed the TOP 10 semiconductor design manufacturers in 7 countries. Also, Intel has stated that they are committed to developing five process nodes within four years so that they can reclaim the position of leading global semiconductor manufacturer, recasting the past glory, and garnering attention from the outside world in the process.
A report by Taiwan Economic Daily indicates that Intel 20A and Intel 18A are in the final stages of design (finalization). There is no doubt that this is the company’s latest technological breakthrough under 2nm, which has made the market more concerned about the process technology competition between the company and TSMC in the near future.
Rui Wang, Intel’s senior vice president and chairman of China, recently stated that, “The semiconductor industry recovers from every significant drop, and we have no doubts about the strategy we have for IDM2.0, whose biggest challenge will be our ability to execute it internally.”. It is clear that no one in the company wants the Q4 earnings report of Intel for 2022, and we cannot afford to make adjustments.
At the moment, Intel is hoping to break out in three ways as a result of the IDM2.0 strategy. In the first place, Intel plans to develop the foundry business in accordance with the plans to achieve 5 nodes in the foundry over the next four years, and plans to regain leadership in the process technology in 2025, and thereby establish fab differentiation through a “system-level foundry”.
There has been a gradual shift in Intel’s process technology planning in recent years from Intel 10 to Intel 7, Intel 4 process, and then to Intel 3 process development, Intel 20A process development, and Intel 18A process development from Intel in recent years.

As Wang Rui pointed out, Intel 7 has been put into mass production, Intel 4 will enter the market in the second half of this year, and will be used for Core processors (Meter Lake), Intel 3 is proceeding as planned, and Intel 20A (2 nm), Intel 18A (1.8 nm) test chips are currently being produced.
Additionally, Intel’s 3nm process technology development was rumored to have been delayed, but later denied by the company’s CEO Kissinger, it is worth mentioning that the market had also rumored that it was delayed. There has been an emphasis on the fact that the relevant plans are proceeding as expected; so far, all the 3nm projects that have been announced will be released by the year 2024.
A new processor series of Intel’s Granite Rapids and Sierra Forest series will be developed using the company’s own Intel3 process, in accordance with the company’s plans. Taking into account the previously announced Intel information, Intel 3 will be able to further take advantage of the advantages of FinFET optimization, enhance the use of the EUV ratio, and bring more enhancements than ever before. It is expected that Intel3 is going to provide about 18% improvement in performance per watt, when compared with Intel 4 process, and production is expected to begin gradually at the end of this year.
Moreover, Wang also stated that Intel has a great deal of confidence in its ability to return to the top of the food chain by 2025 as well.
