Ismail Haniyeh, a prominent leader of Hamas, was assassinated in Iran earlier this week, prompting a wave of tributes. Sheikh Sabri was detained at his home after honoring Haniyeh during a Friday sermon. He was subsequently taken to the Masqubia detention center. The arrest came after Israeli Interior Minister Itmar Ben Gweir and National Security Minister Moshe Arbel accused Sheikh Sabri of incitement.
Before his arrest, Sheikh Sabri addressed the media, denying the incitement allegations. He defended his tribute as an expression of religious sentiment and questioned the interpretation of his words as provocative. He highlighted the contradiction in being accused of incitement in a society that values freedom of speech.
This incident follows demands from several Israeli ministers for action against Sheikh Sabri for his praise of Ismail Haniyeh.
