The new month of March has started, and what this means is that it’s officially time for Google to reveal its latest Android security patch for its various Pixel devices. With the schedule in mind, the search engine giant is rolling out the patch to not only the Google Pixel smartphones, but also to the company’s Pixel C tablet.

And while we’re on the subject of updates, it isn’t only Google that is set for some activity in relation to updates, as Essential too is rolling out this patch in particular to the Essential phone right now, as this update is set to bring Digital Wellbeing support for the handset.

This latest update will resolve many security vulnerabilities that have been identified in the past few weeks. None of the bugs had actually been used to harm any users with any sorts, the most severe problem that is actually getting patched :

The most severe of these issues is a critical security vulnerability in Media framework that could enable a remote attacker using a specially crafted file to execute arbitrary code within the context of a privileged process. The severity assessment is based on the effect that exploiting the vulnerability would possibly have on an affected device, assuming the platform and service mitigations are turned off for development purposes or if successfully bypassed.”

The Pixel updates

The Pixel 3 and XL devices are not only on the receiving end of the security patch, but are also set to receive some functional updates. These updates include an improved startup as well as improved responsiveness of the camera app, an improved recovery in the case of an OTA failure, improved storage performance as well as improved Bluetooth reliability. There is also an improvement of encrypted media in some of the video apps.

Just to remind you again, Google has indeed stopped the updates coming in for both the Nexus 6P and the Nexus 5X, so in the case where you happen to be using the any of the two devices, you will have to check for third-party ROMs along with other sources online in the case where you want the ongoing firmware and security updates.
