As a result of financial fraud, the FIA has arrested 415 fraudsters.

During the current year, 21259 complaints of financial fraud have been received by the Cyber Crime Wing (CCW) of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). Furthermore, the FIA arrested 415 fraudsters for their involvement in these fraudulent activities. Among the total number of complaints submitted, 3,894 of them were converted to regular inquiries based on the data collected. The number of cases registered in total amounted to 352.

According to the CCW, in 2021, there were 3,894 inquiries and 652 cases registered with the agency. A total of 703 of the accused have been arrested, however. In the official’s opinion, criminals usually employ a variety of methods in order to obtain the trust of innocent people on social media networks in order to commit various types of scams. The fraudsters also use SIM cards that are activated fraudulently via a variety of techniques, including silicon thumb impressions, in order to commit their fraud.

As a matter of fact, it was the responsibility of the PTA to check and monitor illegal biometric verification of SIM cards under section 17 of PECA-2016 (unauthorized issuance of SIM cards). There is no doubt that the officials have handled these offences under section 13 of the PECA-2016 (Electronic Forgery), section 14 of the PECA-2016 (Electronic Fraud), section 16 of the PECA-2016 (Unauthorized Use of Identity Information) and section 17 of the PECA-2016 (Issues of Illegal SIM Cards).

I think that it is important to mention here that CCW has taken important steps to prevent the occurrence of such crimes. It has been reported that there have been crackdowns on the sellers and buyers of silicon thumbs.

As an additional measure to address this loophole, the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) is planning to introduce a live finger detector (LFD) system in the near future. It is also important to note that the database of IMEIs has been maintained in order to identify and report to the PTA any mobile phone that is permanently blocked.
