Booster Dose for the Vaccine may not be Needed

With a rise in the cases of the coronavirus (Delta Variant), many people are left with a dilemma on whether they should get additional dosages of the vaccine.

The coronavirus situation may have gotten significantly better than before, with schools, colleges, offices, and even transport reopening. Let us assure you that the pandemic is far from over. The rise in the delta variant has once again affected the situation in Pakistan. On average there are 3089 new cases being reported in Pakistan every week. The delta variant has also made the situation a little worse as scientists claim that this variant is more transmissible and more deadly.

Booster Dose for the Vaccine

Seeing the rise in cases, the educational minister, Dr. Shafqat Mehmood, even closed downs schools and universities again. However, they have opened again today on a 50% weekly ratio basis. This means that 50 percent of students will go on campus one week, while the other 50% will go on campus the next week. There are also some partial lockdowns being implemented in COVID active areas to control the situation.  Seeing the dire situation, more people are wondering whether booster doses should be taken or not, to ensure safety against the virus.

In line with this, FDA staff members have prepared a document for outside advisors in which they claim that it is still not proven that the efficacy of Comirnaty, the COVID-19 vaccine Pfizer developed with Germany’s BioNTech SE, is declining.

“Some observational studies have suggested declining efficacy of Comirnaty over time against symptomatic infection or against the Delta variant, while others have not,” added the FDA staff. They further said that “However, overall, data indicate that currently U.S licensed or authorized COVID-19 vaccines still afford protection against severe COVID-19 disease and death in the United States,” read the document.

FDA has released a document that will be considered by the committee of outside experts who are to meet today.  They will decide whether an extra dose of the vaccination should be recommended to people or not. Let’s wait and see what the committee decides.
