In a recent development, former PM Imran Khan and Shah Mehmood Qureshi have secured bail in the Cipher Case, a legal saga that has captivated the nation. The Supreme Court, in its latest ruling, approved the bail for the prominent leaders and directed them to submit surety bonds amounting to Rs1 million each.

The decision was made by a three-member bench, which included acting Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Sardar Tariq Masood, Justice Athar Minallah, and Syed Mansoor Ali Shah. The approval of bail comes amidst serious charges faced by the top leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) under Sections 5 and 9 of the Official Secrets Act, 1923. The charges revolve around the alleged revelation of diplomatic ciphers to the public.

The legal proceedings in this high-profile case took an interesting turn earlier this week when the Special Court initiated a fresh trial at Adiala district jail. The trial gained momentum after both Imran Khan and the former foreign minister, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, were indicted for the second time on December 13. The charges were related to the violation of Sections 5 and 9 of the Official Secrets Act.

EX PM Imran Khan, aged 71, and Shah Mehmood Qureshi had been incarcerated during the trial, maintaining their plea of not guilty. The trial was underway at Adiala Jail, where four witnesses had already recorded their statements. However, the legal proceedings took an unexpected turn when the Islamabad High Court (IHC) intervened, deeming the government’s notification for a jail trial as “erroneous” and subsequently annulling the entire proceedings.

The Cipher Case has remained a focal point of national attention, with its twists and turns fueling public speculation. The charges under the Official Secrets Act highlight the gravity of the accusations against the PTI leaders, adding a layer of complexity to an already intricate legal saga. The recent grant of bail by the Supreme Court adds a new chapter to this unfolding narrative, leaving the nation eagerly anticipating the next developments in this high-stakes case.
