You probably must have heard of Captain Marvel, if you haven’t then you probably haven’t even heard of the Marvel cinematic Universe. However, for those of us Pakistanis who have spent their childhoods reading comic books and been up to date with all the movies, there is some unfortunately sad news. Captain Marvel, the latest installment of the Marvel Universe will not be released in Pakistan. ‘Captain Marvel’ was scheduled to release on March 15 in Pakistan, however, the makers have stopped the release in the country.
One of Pakistan’s leading cinemas, Cinepax, has updated the fans about the release of the film. “We are sad to announce that the Disney’s regional office didn’t give Pakistan the rights to run Captain Marvel. Hence, Captain Marvel is not releasing in Pakistan,” they wrote on their official Facebook handle.
Though the reason still remains unclear but interestingly, according to Variety, Disney’s South Asia regional office is in India and headed by Mahesh Samat and we wonder if India has anything to do with stopping Captain Marvel’s release in Pakistan.
However, unconfirmed reports also suggest that the distributor for Marvel/Disney films in Pakistan, Eveready Pictures, might not have paid dues to Disney. Other rumours also suggest that Disney may have demanded a higher percentage of the profits due to last year’s Avengers: Infinity War’s success in Pakistan and that the local distributors are probably not happy about it.
With Disney’s ‘Avengers: End Game’ releasing next month on April 24 worldwide, we will have to wait and see whether the movie gets a go ahead for release in Pakistan or if it meets the same fate as Captain Marvel.
Business recorder believes that not only Captain Marvel but future films are now under threat due to the political tensions between Pakistan and India but we would have to wait and watch as the superhero genre fanbase is increasing crazily in Pakistan and it would be a real deprivation if these movies were to not be released because of such reasons.
