CONDEMNATION OF ATROCITIES IN J&K: INDIA NOT KEEN ON DISCUSSING THE MATTER

Condemnation Every year, OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) summit involves the gathering of Islamic countries to discuss common problems and to devise a system to tackle those problems. However, this year, it had a somewhat peculiar guest: India. Yes, you would be wondering what is India doing in an Islamic summit, but in their defence, India has a Muslim population of more than a 100 million, and according to its External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, it has attended the meeting as a chief guest to represent those Muslims. This decision faced a lot of criticism from some of the Islamic countries specially Pakistan, who have had especially rough recent months with the guest country. The presence of India was boycotted by Pakistan, followed by Turkey, Iran and Qatar.

India responded in delight on being part of the 50th OIC summit, however, when the sensitive matter of Jammu and Kashmir was brought forward, the Indian delegation was not so pleased. A resolution adopted by the organisation condemned “atrocities and human rights violations” in Kashmir — a standard template for all OIC statements over the last several decades. In reply, India said J&K is an “integral part of India and is a matter strictly internal to India”. But unlike previous statements, New Delhi did not say that OIC has no locus standi, and that India rejects the statement.

“As regards the resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir, our stand is consistent and well known. We reaffirm that Jammu & Kashmir is an integral part of India and is a matter strictly internal to India,” the Ministry of External Affairs’ official spokesperson, Raveesh Kumar, said on Saturday.

The Kashmir resolution had the phrase “Indian terrorism” in Kashmir — the last time the resolution mentioned “wicked terrorist act”.
India has always taken strong exception to these resolutions.Indian reaction to such a resolution was expected and it is expected that India would not be keen thereafter to attend Islamic conferences until the matter of Kashmir is resolved.
