WhatsApp services have been down on cellular networks for millions of users across Pakistan since the 10th of Muharram (Ashura).

This issue has caused significant inconvenience for mobile data users, with the majority of reports coming from subscribers of Jazz, Telenor, Ufone, and Zong. Users have taken to social media to report that while WhatsApp calls and text messages are functioning normally, media files such as videos and images are not being processed or loaded as usual. However, WhatsApp is operating smoothly for users on wired broadband (WiFi).

The problem with media loading was most severe during peak hours following Youm e Ashur. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has not issued a statement explaining the prolonged issue.

Major cellular mobile operators are currently investigating the matter.

Previously, the issue affected other apps in the Metaverse, such as Instagram and Facebook, with many users reporting frequent crashes on X (formerly Twitter) and LinkedIn. The disruption is now largely confined to WhatsApp services for mobile network users.

Earlier this week, local authorities restricted Facebook without any official announcement, leading to difficulties accessing the platform across various internet service providers (ISPs). Downdetector indicated that the restriction also impacted Instagram and WhatsApp. At the time of reporting, disruptions were still ongoing.

The restriction was initially set to end by July 17, but it appears the government is now uncertain about how to lift it or whether it should be lifted at all.
