Cracking Down on Chaos: Pakistan PM’s Call for Swift Apprehension of Rioters in 72 Hours Sparks Action and Controversy

The arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan from inside the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on May 9 triggered widespread protests throughout the country. The PTI supporters and activists took to the streets and clashed with the police, which resulted in a show of unprecedented vandalism. In Lahore, the supporters attacked the Corps’ Commander’s House, causing extensive damage to the historic building. PM Shehbaz Sharif, who chaired a meeting at the Punjab Safe City Authority Headquarters in Lahore, directed the Punjab government to apprehend the vandals, planners, instigators, and attackers within the next 72 hours.

Setting a Target for Apprehension of Culprits

The Prime Minister stated that the task of arresting the culprits behind the riots was critical and required swift action to ensure the safety and security of citizens. He set a target for all responsible parties to be apprehended within the next 72 hours, stressing that failure was not an option.

A Comprehensive Approach to Apprehending Culprits

The Prime Minister was unequivocal in his message to the perpetrators, stating that the law would take action against those who made plans and attacked the police. He added that the law would set an exemplary precedent, demonstrating that those who acted against the homeland and its institutions that constantly risked their lives to defeat enemies would face consequences.

The PM further emphasized that attempts to disrupt the peace and stability of the nation were “absolutely unacceptable”. He stated that the situation required unwavering commitment and decisive action without delay. The culprits will be apprehended, and cases will be filed against them in Anti-Terrorism Courts (ATCs) in accordance with the law and Constitution.

Steps to Ensure Swift and Efficient Proceedings

The PM requested an increase in the number of ATCs to ensure swift and efficient proceedings. He emphasized that the government was determined to take all necessary measures, including conducting proceedings at night if required, to ensure justice is served, and the rule of law prevails.

The Prime Minister stressed the need for ATCs to begin work immediately without any delay. He stated that it was crucial to set an example that no terrorist or enemy would dare cast an ill eye upon Pakistan’s institutions until the day of judgment.

Role of the Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister

The PM also requested the caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi to ensure that those responsible for the unrest were arrested and brought to court. The Punjab government decided to constitute a joint investigation team (JIT) to probe riots and vandalism incidents that took place in the province following the arrest of Imran Khan.
