To track down and detect explosives material like guns and bombs could be a hard task, and when it comes to detecting cruelly dangerous materials, it even requires trained dogs and particular tools along with trained men and soldiers.

What if can find a better solution by cutting down the cost and struggle. Well, a lot of effort could simply be saved as a group of engineers has discovered a system to detect explosives and guns trough Wi-Fi. Yes, this idea has the potential to turn out to be effective and it can be used on a massive scale.

Having a diverse portfolio, the team of researchers also has engineers from Rutgers University-New Brunswick, Indiana University- Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI).
Recently a study has been published by Binghamton University in which the researchers give complete information about the way in which ordinary Wi-Fi can be used to effectively identify bombs, weapons and other explosive materials that cannot be else detected without expensive screening tools.

In a statement Yingying (Jennifer) Chen, study co-author and professor at Rutgers-New Brunswick’s school of Engineering said; “This could have a significant impact on keeping the public safe from dangerous objects”.

The structure of the system

In order to detect explosive material, researchers used a Channel State Information (CSI) system from the regular Wi-Fi. First of all, it can detect whether there are risky or dangerous objects in baggage. Afterward, it finds what the material is and what is the risk level related to it.

To check the validity, researchers tested the system by using 15 different objects across metal, liquid and non-dangerous stuff. Moreover, expanding the horizon, researchers also tested this with six bags and boxes across three categories-backpack, handbag, and thick plastic bag.

According to researchers, the accuracy level of this system is 99%. It can identify dangerous and non-dangerous objects. Accuracy level downs a little when it comes to defining what the dangerous object is made up of metal or liquid, the system shows 97% accuracy. In different kinds of bags, the method is 95% accurate in determining doubtful objects.

Well, all this detection system requires wifi device and three antennas. It can run on existing networks. However, surely it is a really cost-effective way to detect explosives and weapons.
