Elon Musk demands regulations for social media and AI

Elon Musk demands regulations for social media and AI. Following the data scandal with the research firm Cambridge Analytica that resulted in as many as private data of 87 million Facebook users’ being compromised, Mark Zuckerberg testified in front of lawmakers.

Being thd CEO of the social media platform, Zuckerberg  the billionair is on Capitol Hill for the second day on Wednesday and he faced hours of questioning by Congressional leaders on the East Coast.

When Zuckerberg was facing situation of questioning by Congressional leaders on East Coast, another tech leader was making discussions on the West Coast.

While speaking to “CBS This Morning”, on Tuesday in California, Musk said that some form of public oversight is needed in a situation when the public good is getting affected by some thing.

He also gave the idea of regulations on social media to the degree that it negatively affects the public good. “We can’t have like willy-nilly proliferation of fake news, that’s crazy,” he said.

According to a clip published Wednesday, Musk told King that getting more clicks on fake news as compared to real news, is not  possible.

Elon Musk himself is open to regulation and his position is not that there should be no regulation and he think the real question, as the internet becomes more important in the lives of people, “is what is the right regulation, not whether there should be or not”, according to Musk.

When news of the Cambridge Analytica scandal broke in March,  Musk deleted the Facebook pages for both Tesla & SpaceX. He deleted these social media pages saying that Facebook “gives me the willies”.

Musk is active on Instagram owned by Facebook, and he also reiterated his warning about artificial intelligence to King on Tuesday and he gave the idea of regulations on AI.

Musk claims not to be normally an advocate of regulation and oversight. He thinks that one should generally err on the side of minimizing those things “but this is a case where you have a very serious danger to the public,” he says.

The billionair also stated:

“It needs to be a public body that has insight and then oversight to confirm that everyone is developing AI safely. This is extremely important. I think the danger of AI is much greater than the danger of nuclear warheads by a lot and nobody would suggest that we allow anyone to build nuclear warheads if they want. That would be insane,”.
