Google Files ‘Important Tab’ being worked on

For all the new Android smartphones, besides the operating system that runs on the smartphones, there is also a set of first-party apps from the search engine giant Google, which serve as a type of starter kit. Even though third-party alternatives to these Google applications are available, there are still a few of them that remain the top choices of Android users. As far as Android file management applications go, Google Files continues to rank among the best, and it will only continue to do so as time goes on. It has been reported that Google may be rethinking its approach to securing file storage in the app, deciding to develop a new method that uses the bottom bar.

Files has a feature called Secure Folders, which has existed since 2020 and is likely familiar to users who have been using it for some time. You will need a PIN or pattern to unlock the device, and any files that are saved therein will not be accessible by third-party applications. In fact, you are not even allowed to take screenshots or share them with anyone else. Nail Sadykov, the founder of the Google News Telegram channel, has discovered a new feature called the Important tab that seems to have a strikingly similar function to that of the google search page.

Located between Clean and Browse on the bottom bar of the application, the new ‘Important tab’ reveals a blank screen where you can add files by clicking the right-aligned floating action button (FAB) located on its right-hand side. As soon as you click on the button, options will appear, such as scanning with the camera, selecting an existing file, or selecting an existing photo. Apparently, when selecting the first option, Sadykov writes, the app launches Google Camera, but when trying to write to the secure folder, it states that it lacks permission to do so. It would be useful to be able to group them by the type of file they belong to, since you can potentially add any type of file here.

A Secure Folder is one of the features that has been available in Files since 2020, and it is probably well known to long-time users. A PIN or pattern must be entered in order to unlock the device, and any files saved inside the device cannot be accessed by third party applications. Even if you were to screenshot them or share them, you would not be able to do so. According to the Google News Telegram channel’s Nail Sadykov, there has been a new feature introduced this week with a similar function called the Important tab.

It would be useful to have the option of grouping the files based on what type of file they are, since you may theoretically upload any sort of file here.

There are a few noticeable distinctions between the present Safe Folder option and the capabilities of the Important tab. One should be able to share files from the latter without first removing them. Next, the upcoming storage location might be more secure due to the use of the Android Biometric Prompt as opposed to a PIN or pattern. So, files saved on the Important tab could be easily accessible and more securely protected from prying eyes which certainly makes the ‘Important Tab’ more attractive. Furthermore, in the future edition of the Google Files application, the Nearby Sharing tab will be modified to include a thorough feature description.
