Honda has reportedly planned a fix for one of the biggest downsides of electric car ownership within the five years from now. According to Nikkei, the largest manufacturer of internal combustion engines of the world claims it will have EVs capable of a full charge in only 15 minutes by the year 2022.

The key to company’s plan is the battery itself. Currently it sources batteries for plug-in hybrids from Panasonic and is also looking for a partner to collaborate with on its new and quick charging battery.

Honda has been also rooted to be working with the unique challenges of electrified cars by engineering lighter bodies. These lighter bodies are able to go farther on a single battery charge to minimise the range anxiety that has been plaguing EV drivers since their introduction.

Honda sets a goal for 2022 with a Honda EV to go 150 miles only on a 15-minute charge.

The fastest quick chargers are currently able to charge an EV battery to about 80 % in almost 30 minutes. That is pretty good, but still not too good to establish widespread acceptance of electric vehicles with those drivers are used to the convenience of quickly filling fuel tanks for internal combustion engines in only 5 minutes anywhere massive network of gas stations in the World.

Apparently, Honda is looking at EVs in a little different way than the rest of the car industry. Rather than focusing on how much long or many miles a vehicle can go on a giant battery that takes a relatively long time to soak up electrons, Honda has been and is focusing on how far an EV can go on only a 15-minute charge.

It could be a smart way to appeal the drivers that are skeptical of electric vehicles and are concerned about charge times and range anxiety by putting range into real-life, everyday language that is easily understandable.

Honda’s goal is a noble one that could be great for the EV world (if comes true), it remains to be seen how far along established electric competitors such as Nissan and Tesla will be in coming five years.

Is it possible that a full charge in 15 minutes already be the industry standard by 2020? If so, Honda is going forward to have to do a little more to stand out in the plug-in segment of the cars.
