The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has taken action against non-filers of income tax returns by blocking a total of 105,000 SIM cards. According to sources, the FBR is providing data of 5,000 non-filers daily to telecom operators for further action.

A significant development has been the restoration of mobile phone SIM cards for 18,902 citizens after they filed their income tax returns. Last month, FBR initiated a Joint Working Group (JWG) comprising tax officials and telecom operators to implement the Income Tax General Order (ITGO) No 1 of 2024 and facilitate the process of blocking SIM cards of non-filers.

It’s noteworthy that major telecom operators commenced the process of blocking SIM cards for non-filers on May 20.

FBR has identified a total of 506,671 individuals who failed to file their 2023 income tax returns.
