So the Marriott Starwood database has been breached with a reported number of 500 million people’s data being compromised in the process. In a statement released by the company, they have stated that there has been unauthorized access to the database, which contains information surrounding the many guests they have had over the years and some that they will entertain in the near future. Moreover for the 327 million affected people, they information gained from them includes, some combination of the name, there mailing address, the phone number, passport numbers, there email addresses, account information, date of birth, gender, and hence involved data experts in order to determine the nature of the problem.
It added: “The company has not finished identifying duplicate information in the reservation date and finally communication preferences. So some really sensitive and important information has been gained by the hackers and one can say that they have more or less all of the tools to create some unforeseen problems for the Marriott Starwood database.
So far Marriott have taken measures in order to stabilize the situation somewhat. They have added measures to investigate and address the data security breach. Moreover the company said “On November 19, 2018, the investigation determined that there was unauthorized access to the database, which contained guest information relating to reservations at Starwood properties on or before September 10, 2018.” Moreover the company got to know of the incident, when they received an alert from an internal security tool which showed that their was an attempt to access the database on September 8th. “The company recently discovered that an unauthorized party had copied and encrypted information, and took steps towards removing it. Moreover they said On November 19, 2018, Marriott was able to decrypt the information and determined that the contents were from the Starwood guest reservation database. The company further added: “The company has not finished identifying duplicate information in the database, but believes it contains information on up to approximately 500 million guests who made a reservation at a Starwood property.”
Moreover for some people the information gained by the hackers was only limited to just the name and may be the email address but for other they got pretty much all of the information which can prove quite devastating for the customers. Furthermore the company say that they have already reported the said inconvenience to the law enforcement agencies and hence assure the people that they are getting all the necessary help from these authorities.
Finally the company has already started sending out emails to the affected guests. So lets see how this turns out for the company as well as for the people
