The Ministry of IT and Telecom in Pakistan is taking steps to implement a new policy aimed at addressing the issue of non-payment among smartphone installment users. According to reliable sources, the Ministry has prepared a policy draft that involves blocking the mobile phones of individuals who fail to make payments on their installments.

The Ministry and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) are working on a mechanism that will allow for the blocking of smartphones when payments are not made on time.
However, not all mobile phone companies are in agreement with the central system of blocking defaulters’ mobile SIMs. In a recent stakeholder meeting, two out of four companies expressed their opposition to this approach. PTA, on the other hand, stated that it requires a policy directive to block the mobile phones of defaulters.

Some stakeholders have suggested that the policy should also include the blocking of SIM cards and identity cards of defaulters. Additionally, there is consideration for blocking Google services as part of this policy. The Ministry officials have highlighted that GSMA and Qast Pay have already launched smartphones, providing a potential model to be followed in this new policy.
