CDA to seal Centaurus Mall Islamabad

Last night, Islamabad’s renowned Centaurus Mall was sealed by the Capital Development Authority’s (CDA) Building Control Department (BCD).

Reports indicate that the mall was sealed due to its nonconforming use, and there is no sign of its reopening. Generally, a nonconforming use is considered to be a nonconforming use in urban planning, which means that a piece of land is exempt from current zoning regulations due to improvements the owner may have made or because the intended use was permitted before current laws made it illegal to do so.

After attending a ceremony in Mangla, Prime Minister Tanveer Ilyas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), interrupted Shehbaz Sharif’s speech as he was giving an address to the audience.

According to the PTI leader, Fawad Chaudhry, this development is connected to the incident that occurred during the speech of the prime minister.

Furthermore, it is also worth pointing out here that Centaurus’ CEO, Yasir Ilyas, is the brother of the Chief Minister of AJK, Sardar Tanveer Ilyas. As reported, the shopping center has been guarded by a large number of security personnel as a precaution.

In October 2022, a massive fire broke out in the food court of Islamabad’s Centaurus Mall, which remained closed for a few weeks.

The mall’s management successfully met structural and safety requirements after the Chainstore Association of Pakistan (CAP) requested its reopening from the CDA.

A fact-finding committee led by an Additional District Magistrate found that cooking oils and other inflammatory materials caused the fire to spread rapidly.

Irfan Nawaz Memon, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Islamabad, ordered the building to be sealed indefinitely following the incident.

According to Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Police, everyone was safely evacuated from the building.
