A lot of different names have been thrown about when it comes to Google’s first foldable smartphone, which has been rumored for quite some time. Nonetheless, it appears from a new leak that it is going to be called the Google Pixel Fold, not the Pixel Slate.

This device reportedly is still in the pipeline, and it is allegedly one of the most secretive projects in the history of Google – and it will reportedly be launched alongside the Pixel Tablet next May. Given that Google’s annual developer conference, I/O, always takes place in May, we speculate that an announcement might be made at I/O, Google’s annual developer conference. Google is releasing two different color options for the device, which they are calling Chalk (aka white) and Obsidian (aka black).

The device has been rendered a number of times in both colorways, from original 3D renders to re-creations based on 3D renders and “other stuff”, but there haven’t been any specs released yet.

In the report the unnamed sources inform us that the Pixel Fold’s performance will be similar to that of regular Pixel devices, along with a flagship camera that’s similar to Pixel devices. Although there was some indication from one source that the device is extremely heavy, it was not followed by a detailed explanation of how heavy the device actually is compared to what else.

A price of $1,799 has also been announced for the Pixel Fold. It is at this price that Samsung has launched its Galaxy Z Fold4 smartphone in the US, and that is what will be the main rival of the Pixel Fold for the foreseeable future, so we mention it here because Samsung will be the main competitor for the Pixel Fold in the near future. It is also worth noting that by the time Google’s foldable finally hits the streets, the Galaxy Z Fold4 will certainly be enjoying a ton of discounts, so it remains to be seen whether the Pixel Fold will be able to make itself stand out enough to draw people, as well as benefiting from some discounts.

There is a camera bar on the Pixel Fold, but it is not as expansive as on the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, since it does not go all the way to the edges, when compared to the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro. It’s still an adequate amount, even so, and somehow makes this phone immediately recognizable as a Pixel when it comes to looks. Two 9.5 MP cameras are placed on either side of the strangely large top bezel of the inner screen. One of these cameras is located inside the hole punched into the outer screen, and the other on the right side of the same hole.

A fingerprint reader is embedded into the power button, and two speakers are located on either side of the device – one on the top side and one on the bottom side. There is nothing else on this leak that reveals anything about the Pixel Fold. However, we would expect the Pixel Fold to be powered by a Tensor processor as well.
