As a result of the Punjab government’s failure to contain the level of smog in the province, Lahore High Court (LHC) has expressed serious displeasure with the Punjab government.

According to an LHC bench, which heard petitions challenging the prevailing smog in Punjab, the province may declare three public and private holidays over the next few days in order to deal with the issue.

Also, the bench is considering ordering that all public and private organizations in the province be required to implement work-from-home (WFH) policies. These measures were considered by the LHC so as to prevent citizens from falling victim to the diseases caused by smog.

According to Justice Shahid Kareem, the Judge of the LHC, the Punjab government does not seem serious about taking strict measures to curb smog in the province and appears unmotivated to do so.

As a result of smog in the province getting worse by the day, he said, it is only a matter of time before the situation worsens. As part of the move to contain smog in Punjab, Justice Shahid advised the government to hire a number of renowned international environmentalists.

In his directive, Justice Shahid asked the lawyers to consult the relevant provincial ministries regarding the closure of educational institutes and WFH for offices and to inform the court on the date of the next hearing.
