The Governance of Sindh announce ban on Uber and Careem

Uber and Careem both with a course of time have gained a lot of popularity with people booking these cars from apps within their phones to reach their respective destinations. Now the Government of Sindh has decided to ban both Enterprises. This is not the first time Careem and Uber have had to bear such problems; previously Punjab too had the same thoughts on these companies as Sindh has on them. The reason for the ban seems to be that according to the Sindh government both companies are not operating at the proper tax net and basically have not registered their businesses. The ban is applied in Karachi and the other cities of Sindh where this service is functional. The Transport Minister of Sindh, Mr Awais Shah during his meeting with the province’s transportation department has been quoted to have banned the two companies. He has also revealed that they are planning on writing a letter to both companies, ordering them to cease functionality in the entire Sindh province.

So basically after such companies have been launched the government is allowed to treat them in two ways. They could either treat them as taxi service or such services can be regulated by the government. In order to operate as a private taxi, the vehicle must first be made commercial and the owners of the cars must obtain a fitness certificate. If Careem and Uber can somehow correct this, then maybe the government can allow them to carry out their operations. These multinationals are brought in to the country with great efforts and negotiations are in process from the get go. As Pakistan does not have a firm transportation structure these companies are warmly welcomed to provide such services. These services hence not only provide ease to the customers but also create loads of employment opportunities.

Furthermore people don’t seem happy with this development. One such person wrote on twitter that “The Government’s duty is to provide more facilities, employment opportunities, not to end the current sources of money. Uber and Careem are the source for poor people to earn money from Halal and hardworking ways”.  Hence the decision is only going to make it worse for the government since people are only getting outraged with such decisions and they are most likely to increase in numbers. These services provided ease for them and not to forget provided hundreds and thousands of jobs for the poor and unemployed.
