Sony latest and upcoming flagship device is designed to give the manufacturer an edge into the smartphone world, with the company not doing so well in the industry in recent times. While the specs that the phone will come with certainly seem to do justice for Sony’s thinking, the price tag attached to the phone might not exactly be justifiable – especially for a company desperately trying to hang on. The device was announced at the MWC 2019 which was held in February, and at that time, there wasn’t any mention of the price. However, Sony has not only announced that the phone is set for a July 12 launch, but the company has also stated that the price tag that the Xperia 1 is set to bring with – a staggering $949.

Needless to say, Sony has done some good things when it comes to the phone. It features with a super tall 21:9 4K HDR OLED display, with Sony claiming that this is a first for a mobile device. The premium look of the phone continues to the rear, as it happens to be made up of glass. Coupled with the Snapdragon 855 processor, the phone comes with 6 gigs of RAM along with 128 gigs of internal storage.

However, the main question stands – does the amazing display justify the $949 price tag? Not really. There are a range of options that may compete against the device – at half the price, with phones such as the Mi 9, OnePlus 7, Lenovo Z6 all coming to mind. And taking into consideration the flagship side of things, the phone isn’t even equipped with an In-display fingerprint scanner, utilizing the side-mounted lock button as the fingerprint sensor.

When you think of such a powerful display resolution, one would have to imagine a powerful enough battery to complement it – however, this hasn’t turned out to be the case, as the company has integrated a rather average battery of 3300mAh under the hood, which is quite inadequate when taking into consideration the display as well as some of the specs.

The phone will be launching in the US on the 12th of July, and while Sony has high hopes for it, the huge price tag just might deter such hopes. We’ll wait and see though.
