Two Smugglers Arrested By The Customs Department

Two suspects have been handed over to the Customs department for interrogation surrounding a case of smuggling banned direct-to-home(DTH) equipment in the open market. The local court has sent to major suspects to the Customs for a reported physical remand. The equipment is said to be allegedly smuggled for illicit transmission of Indian channels.

The two suspects were reportedly arrested during a raid which took place in the town of Korangiarea situated in Karachi on the 27th October. Furthermore the officials stated that they had found thousands of DTH boxes which belonged to foreign brands such as Dish TV, Star Gold Satellite Dish, HD Ready and Satcom including other equipment which gave the total equipment’s worth about 14,295,000.

The Officials further arrested an absconding suspect along with the other two major suspects. On October 29th the investigating officer, who requested a physical remand for interrogation produced the detained suspects before the Customs court Judge. The Officer stated that the Customs were taking several important measures to prevent the supply of such illegal and smuggled DTH equipment in the open market.

Furthermore the Officer said that the action against such frauds was taken into consideration under the recent directive issued by the Chief Justice of Pakistan. The judge, whilst hearing the suo moto case directed to counter the illegal sale operations and the availability of such DTH equipment in the free market. He further added that its use being the transmission of Indian channels, money transfers in lieu of charges which can be considered beneficial for these companies which are situated in Indian should be banned and impossible to be used.

Finally the custom officials were also searching for other members who may have been involved in carrying out such a task and ensured that the investigation is still underway and they will bring all these culprits to justice. Moreover the Officer In-charge told the media that the department will share the findings of the investigation with Federal Investigation Agency and the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority to keep the people and media updated throughout the on-going investigation.
