The process of opening a bank account can be quite a hassle. There are various banks with different requirements to open an account and some will require more information than other banks. It can be even more of an issue if you hold an occupation as you will require more proof of the legitimacy of your job.

However however, it is worth noting that the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has announced a brand new program that allows you to create a bank account without leaving the comfort of your home. It is possible to do this in the absence of an internet connection. You are now able to open an account with a bank by sending an SMS to *2262# using SBP’s brand new Asaan mobile Facility for Accounts.

The entire process is shown in the above image. It is possible to start via SMS. Send an email to the address previously mentioned, sign up and select the bank you want to use and then add CNIC information, and then get an account PIN.

This indicates that the facility isn’t restricted only to State Bank of Pakistan, but it can be used to open an account at any bank.

The Head of the Premier’s Strategic Reforms Unit, Salman Sufi, announced the decision via Twitter. Salman Sufi wrote:

The financial system is a must for transgender women and female citizens, and especially for those with no mobile phone data. Simply text *2262# to open an account at a bank without going to any bank. All you require is your CNIC. Let’s make banking accessible to all. Not just a handful.

It is important to note that even though the official states that “women and transgender citizens” are eligible for assistance but it is worth noting that the facility is available to anyone. However, the official from the government said that the facility has particular attention paid to women as they typically face more difficulties when opening an account at a bank.

One user inquired about what bank accounts function with verification, deposits transfer, withdrawals, and other services and other services, in response to which Salman Sufi responded by saying that all of this can be accomplished by SMS.

It will be fascinating for us to observe how the program develops and whether it is received by the general public including transgender women and individuals.
